Cancel your insurance after the car has been picked up and the title hand-off is complete—not before. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date. If a plate or registration step must be completed before insurance is stopped, do that first and confirm the current rule with the Texas DMV. Then call your insurer, remove the donated vehicle or cancel the policy, and ask for a prorated refund of any prepaid premium.
The right cancellation sequence
Confirm pickup and hand-off
Do not cancel while the car is still in your driveway, at a repair shop, or waiting for pickup. First, confirm that pickup happened, the keys went with the vehicle, and the signed title was handed off as instructed. Until that hand-off is complete, you may still have ownership risk. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the date you give the insurer.
Handle plates and registration
Before you call the insurer, handle any required plate or registration step. Some states expect donors to remove plates, return plates, or cancel registration before insurance ends. Other states do not use that order. If you are not sure which rule applies to your vehicle, check the current motor vehicle instructions and complete that step before cancelling coverage.
Call with donation date
Call your insurer after the hand-off is complete. Tell the representative that the vehicle was donated and give the pickup/title-transfer date as the effective date. Keep the language simple: the vehicle is no longer in your possession, and you need the policy updated from that date. If they ask for documents, note exactly what they need.
Remove or cancel coverage
If you have a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle. Do not cancel the entire policy unless that is what you intend. If this was your only car, ask to cancel the policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. One note: if you plan to buy another car soon, ask about options that avoid a gap in continuous coverage.
Request any premium refund
If you prepaid for coverage, ask whether you are owed a prorated refund for the unused premium. Also ask how it will be issued and when you should watch for it. If you pay monthly, ask whether the change stops the next draft or changes the next bill. Do not assume the refund is automatic.
Save written confirmation
Ask the insurer to send written confirmation showing the vehicle, the effective date, and whether a refund is due. Save it with your donation receipt, title copy if you kept one, pickup paperwork, and any registration record. Also keep the name or ID of the representative you spoke with. For the ownership notice side, see our Release-of-Liability Guide.
Refunds and effective dates
Most insurers calculate any premium adjustment from the effective date you provide, but refund rules depend on your policy and billing status. If you prepaid, ask whether the unused portion will be returned and how it will arrive. If you pay monthly, ask whether the change stops future installments or reduces the next bill. If the representative uses a different date than the pickup/title-transfer date, ask why and get the answer in writing. Do not backdate the cancellation to a date before hand-off.
Common questions
Can I cancel insurance the day before pickup?
No. Keep coverage in place until the vehicle is picked up and the title hand-off is complete. Cancelling early can leave you responsible for an uninsured loss while the car is still legally yours. Some states also penalize a lapse while a vehicle remains registered.
What date should my insurer use?
Use the pickup/title-transfer date. That is the cleanest date because it matches when the vehicle left your possession and the signed title was handed off. If your insurer asks for proof, provide the donation receipt, pickup record, or other paperwork you received.
What if this car was on a multi-car policy?
Ask the insurer to remove the donated vehicle only. The rest of the policy should stay active for your other vehicles unless you ask for a broader change. Review the updated declarations page or confirmation notice so you know the correct vehicle was removed.
Will I get money back after cancelling?
You may receive a prorated refund if you prepaid for coverage beyond the effective date, but the amount and method depend on your policy. Ask directly whether a refund is due, how it will be sent, and whether any final bill or balance remains.
More donation prep guides
After donation pickup, insurance cleanup is mostly a sequence problem: confirm hand-off, handle any plate or registration requirement, call the insurer, update the policy, request any refund, and save written proof.
